Stevenage upset the early season formbook with this astonishing five-goal demolition of Accrington Stanley.

Before the start of this game the sides found themselves of either end of the table with Stevenage losing both their opening encounters while Accrington Stanley sat in second place with a 100 per cent record.

But these early indicators proved totally unreliable as Stevenage dominated from the outset with Barry Laker firing a warning just two minutes in for the home side, when he cannoned a 30-yard effort off the crossbar.

Stevenage inevitable took the lead after just six minutes and it was Brian Quailey who headed powerfully home, following a neat Dannie Bulman cross from the left.

The lead was then doubled and it was another cross and header combination which undid the visitors as Ritchie Hanlon headed low into the bottom corner following a Justin Gregory cross, again from the left.

Stevenage continued to apply the pressure with Bulman, Hanlon and Anthony Elding all coming close, while Stanley's only real effort on goal came on 31 minutes when Steve Jagielka squandered a chance just 12 yards out when he drove the ball straight at home keeper Rob Burch.

Stevenage began the second half in similarly impressive form and sub Joe Flack almost made an instant impact with a shot which was well saved by Accrington Stanley keeper Jon Kennedy.

The visitors could do nothing about the continuing home pressure and fell 3-0 down on the hour mark when skipper Jason Goodliffe swept home from close range after a Mark Rogers flick on.

Two minutes later and it was Goodliffe again on target when he headed in following a Bulman corner.

With Stanley tiring late on their woe continued with Boro sub George Boyd tormenting their defence to set up Flack to drive home across the face of goal for the fifth on 81 minutes.
