Referee Beck awarded 50 fouls in the match, but despite his best efforts both sides turned into an entertaining performance to produce a game which could have gone either way.
Aldershot began stronger and had two good efforts on goal thwarted by the linesman's offside flag. Boro, meanwhile, had the best effort when Jon Nurse was clear on goal after just ten minutes, but he fired his shot at keeper Nikki Bull from just five yards out.
Stevenage broke the deadlock on 16 minutes when George Boyd found the back of the net with a tame shot which keeper Bull fumbled over the line.
But to their credit Aldershot hit back straight away and they were level just two minutes later when Nick Crittenden fired in from 12 yards after Stevenage's Luke Oliver had failed to head out a deep cross.
Stevenage came close through Dannie Bulman and Nurse, while Aldershot's Leroy Griffiths forced a fine stop from Boro keeper Alan Julian.
Both sides went in search of the winner in the second half, but it was difficult to find any rhythm with so many stoppages.
Ironically the game turned when the ref sent off Darren Barnard after 76 minutes for his second yellow card in the space of ten minutes.
Stevenage were to profit from this, within a minute they grabbed a winner when Darryn Stamp headed a Bulman cross across the face of goal for Dino Maamria to stab home from close range.
Sub Matt Somner and Leroy Griffiths both had chances to pull the scores level, but it was Stevenage who sealed late on for their first win in four games.
