In a game of few chances it will be Graham Westley and his men who will be happiest to come away with all three points to keep alive their ever-growing play off hopes.

The game was settled by a piece of clinical finishing from Tunisian striker Dino Maamria just after the restart.

Dean Brennan moved effortlessly through the midfield and found Anthony Elding in space on the edge of the Halifax box.

His poor first touch saw the ball bounce into the path of Maamria and he coolly slotted the ball past the right of the helpless Halifax keeper Cartwright and into the net.

The game had started in turbulent fashion. Within the first minute Maamria found himself through on goal and in the penalty area. As he collected a poor back pass he was clearly pushed over by the retreating Halifax defence when looking to score.

The referee chose to ignore what could easily have been a red card and penalty in another phase of the game.

The early pressure was all Stevenage's, with Elding peppering the goal at every opportunity.

But on ten minutes Halifax had their first real opportunity. On loan striker Clayton Donaldson was clear through on goal but his low shot went out for a throw in.

Boro thought they had scored on 20 minutes an inswinging Brennan corner was headed goalwards by Laker and cleared off the line.

Many in the ground thought that it was in but after a cursory check with his assistant referee McKintosh ruled play on.

Boro kept up the pressure and on the half hour some fine work down the right wing by Elding and Wormull saw the ball come over and captain Steve Watson blasted just over from 15 yards out.

As half time approached a 30-yard raking Watson pass found Gould on the left wing. His cross-cum-shot was heading into the back of the net when Darren Hockenhull cleared off the line with his head.

Halifax went straight up the other end and a fine run by the busy Donaldson saw him once again one on one with Perez. This time he almost scored but after beating Perez he could only find the post.

After Boro scored in the early stages of the second half they kept the pressure up well and Wormull was unlucky to see a snapshot brush inches past the post.

Stevenage then settled for controlling the match and restricting Halifax's chances.

On 76 minutes Halifax almost equalised when a defensive mix up between Perez and Bunce resulted in the keeper being stranded out wide on the right. But despite goalbound efforts by Donaldson and Colly the Boro defence held firm until Perez regained his position.

As injury time approached and it seemed unlikely that Halifax would equalise midfielder Val Owen unleashed a stunning 30 yard shot which was spectacularly tipped over by Lionel Perez.
