Telford proved that a good dose of hard graft allied to a stunning strike can prove enough to grab the three points in any Conference fixture.

This certainly proved the case as the visitors held Stevenage at bay for almost the entire length of this contest and contrived to win it with a goal of remarkable quality.

Telford began the game the brighter of the two sides and twice came close to scoring in the first eight minutes.

Fitzroy Simpson fired across a corner which required the faintest of touches to give Telford an opener, while Sam Ricketts made a mockery of the Stevenage defence as he powered through only to force a fine block from former Sunderland keeper Lionel Perez.

Telford were forced into a change when Trevor Challis was stretchered from the pitch after crashing painfully into advertising boards. But his replacement Richard Lavery soon settled in well and in a first half of few chances, Stevenage has just three efforts which were all blasted wide of goal by off-target skipper Steve Watson.

The second period began well for Telford and within a minute of the restart Naylor had caused consternation in the home defence when he fired an effort across the face of goal.

It proved to be an omen of things to come for Stevenage as on 56 minutes it was Naylor who fired the visitors into the lead when he curled an effort into the top right-hand corner following a pinpoint through ball by Chris Murphy.

Stevenage brought on top scorer Antony Elding and the frontman certainly sparked a revival as the home side went forward in the final ten minutes.

But although Telford found themselves under almost constant pressure, the only real effort of the half came deep into the four minutes of added time when Jon Brady powered clear on goal, only for his effort to be crucially smothered by Telford keeper Chris MacKenzie.
