Lawrie Wilson's strike enhanced Stevenage's play-off hopes with a battling 1-0 victory over fellow promotion-chasers Port Vale.

Wilson's 72nd-minute goal could have ended Vale's hopes of breaking into the top six, but at the same time could have earned the home side the victory which sees them in with a great chance of making the jump to League One.

Wilson found the bottom right-hand corner with 18 minutes to go to secure a valuable win at Broadhall Way as Graham Westley's side kept up the pace at the top end of the table with just two matches remaining.

The home side could have won by more and John Mousinho, Michael Bostick and Byron Harrison all wasted good chances.

Vale had their own chances with Robert Taylor and Marc Richards both shooting wide, while substitute Sam Morsy rifled wide with seven minutes remaining, a chance that had it gone in would have salvaged a draw for the visitors.
