Scarborough gave away a two-goal lead as Stevenage made a dramatic late rally in an action-packed game at the McCain Stadium.

The Seadogs should have taken the lead after only four minutes when man of the match Clint Marcelle missed a sitter going just wide of the upright.

A minute later Michael Brough found the net at the other end but the referee had already blown his whistle.

Stevenage's Justin Richards, who was on great form throughout the game, masterminded a chain of chances and went close with a fine 15-yard shot which hit the side-netting.

Tony Hackworth created a great chance for Scarborough with a volley across the front of the goal but there was no-one on the spot to finish off the move.

Stevenage's hopes were raised when Anthony Elding produced a superb drive from the edge of the box, only to see it crash against the crossbar.

Wayne Gill three times went close for Scarborough as they strove to command the run of play and their pressure appeared to pay off when Marcelle headed home only to be ruled offside.

Gill, who had one of his best games of the season, was unlucky when he failed to net with a shot on the turn, and Stevenage should have been ahead at the break when Elding produced a spectacular header which goalkeeper Leigh Walker did well to save.

Both goals came under repeated attack in the second half when the game really came to life.

Gill tested Stevenage keeper Mark Westhead with a 20-yard volley and the visitors had another chance five minutes later when Elding fired wide when faced with an open goal after beating keeper Walker and Kevin Nicholson.

Scarborough broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute when Marcelle bounced the ball into the net to give keeper Westhead no chance after a fine solo run and he was almost the architect of a second goal three minutes later only for Richard Hodgson to nip in to block his bid.

Karl Rose scored Scarborough's second goal when he seized his chance with a well-placed shot after being set up by Nicholson.

But Stevenage were constantly in the hunt and pulled a goal back in the 79th minute from their third corner in two minutes, thanks to Brough who scored from close range, and five minutes later got a well-deserved equaliser when substitute Dean Brennan scored from a Brough cross.

Both sides produced raids in the dying minutes in the hope of finding the winner, Scarborough substitute Chris Senior having a chance cleared off the line, and Elding and Richards each forcing the home side to pack their goal with some polished moves.
