Stevenage Borough kept their outside hopes of promotion in sight when they beat relegation-threatened Leigh RMI 3-1 at Hilton Park.

Leigh Old Boy Dino Maamria was hero-turned-villain as he opened the scoring for the visitors but then missed a second-half penalty.

It mattered not as Justin Richards and Anthony Elding also registered for the Boro with goal-machine David McNiven grabbing a consolation for Leigh.

James Gould was a constant thorn in the Leigh side during the first half and he won a corner that Maamria met with a forceful header that Ian Martin did well to save.

A minute later, Jon Brady crossed from the right and Elding put a free header wide.

Kris McHale dispossessed Nathan Bunce, but his shot-cum-cross flew harmlessly wide.

Gould again was the instigator for Stevenage, causing problems down the left with his trickery, and when he won a corner Maamria again failed to make it count.

It was no surprise when Gould provided the ammunition for Stevenage to take the lead two minutes before the break. He won another corner that Dean Brennan took and found Maamria, who this time headed home against his former club on the front post.

Steve Redmond almost equalised two minutes after the break with a shot from 25 yards that keeper Lionel Perez tipped away for a corner.

However, the visitors doubled their lead ten minutes after half time when Brady threaded a great ball through for Elding to beat Martin from just inside the box.

McNiven gave Leigh hope on the hour when he scored his 20th goal in the Conference and 22nd in all competitions, when he broke down the right channel to beat Perez from an acute angle.

Redmond then pulled down substitute Richards in the box. Redmond was booked while Martin pulled off a top save to deny Maamria from the spot.

Redmond's nightmare continued when he gave the ball away in the 70th minute to Elding, who squared the ball to Richards and the substitute had the easiest of tasks of tapping into an empty net.

Carl Rezai worked a good position for himself and then spoiled all the good work by blazing well wide as RMI looked to fight back.

Michael Warner came to the visitors aid when he cleared off his own line during a goalmouth scramble but Stevenage almost had the last word when Richards struck the post deep into injury time.
