Hereford United club skipper Ian Wright snatched an unlikely point for the Bulls with a header seven minutes and 44 seconds into stoppage time at the end of a dramatic encounter at Edgar Street.

Until substitute Wright's late intervention it seemed as if Barry Laker had grabbed the points for the visitors when he headed home Michael Warner's free kick two minutes from the end of normal time.

Earlier Jamie Pitman had marked his 100th appearance for Hereford in a style he won't wish to remember, when he diverted Danny Carroll's cross-shot into his own net on 25 minutes.

Top scorer Steve Guinan then levelled for the Bulls five minutes into the second half.

Boro, featuring seven players who were turning out for Farnborough little more than a month ago, as well as new signing from Boston, Anthony Elding, got in early shots through Simon Wormull and Carroll before they took a rather fortuitous lead.

Wormull played in Carroll whose shot was going wide until Pitman slipped as he attempted to clear and slid the ball into the corner of his own net.

Guinan's rocket header from a Jay Lovett cross levelled matters and Hereford had convincing appeal for a penalty waved away when John Grant was felled by Justin Gregory, but when Laker headed home it looked as though the three vital points were heading back to Stevenage.

Then Danny Williams' late free-kick was knocked away for a corner and the young midfielder delivered a perfect flag-kick for Wright to head in.

"We were daft conceding a second goal like we did, but there is a never say die attitude about our side now," said Hereford director of football Graham Turner.

"It was a tremendous leap by Ian Wright, he must have been higher than the crossbar when he headed that one in."
