Goals from Lutel James and Paul Mullin proved the difference for Accrington as they staged a valiant fightback at home Stevenage.

Dean Brennan put Stevenage in front after 31 minutes when he rose brilliantly to head home a George Boyd corner from the right.

But Stanley, spurred on by their star strikers, were not about to miss on the opportunity to leapfrog their opponents in the league standings.

James scored his 18th goal of the season in the 66th minute to start the turn of the tide and then three minutes later Mullin, the former Radcliffe Borough hitman, popped up to register his 22nd of the campaign and gave the home side three vital points towards their promotion bid.

Stanley are now seventh, while Stevenage drop to eighth, just one point behind having played a game less.

James, in particular, was at the heart of Stanley's best attacks and it was fitting the former Bury striker helped the home side draw level soon after the hour mark.

Stevenage gave the ball away carelessly from a Michael Warner throw-in and James didn't waste his chance.

The striker found time and space to fire the ball past Stevenage keeper Mark Westhead and Stanley then increased the pressure.

Again Stanley won the ball from a throw-in and after a quick succession of passes the ball fell to the feet of Mullin.

And it was no surprise that on the on-song centre-forward found the back of the net again, as he has done so often this season.

Stevenage did have their own chances to at least snatch a draw for their hard work.

The best of which fell to Steve Watson, but he was denied when his powerful shot was cleared off the line.

Brennan also saw a testing corner, backed by the wind, somehow cleared from the danger area, and Stevenage's scorer also had a snapshot well-saved by Stanley keeper Jon Kennedy.

But however hard Stevenage tried they just couldn't find a way through and Stanley were left the happier of the two sides.
