Stevenage chairman Phil Wallace says that the fans' reaction to their clinching promotion was one reason that makes people go into football.Borough secured the Blue Square Premier title and a place in the Football League with a 2-0 win at Kidderminster.

He told BBC Three Counties Radio: "I'm really proud and so pleased for all the fans. You have to be here to see what it means to all the fans.

"That is what you go into football for in the first place."

He continued: "I didn't enjoy [the game] at all. I enjoyed it at 2-0 up, but you are still looking at the clock thinking 'don't get one, don't get one' because you don't want the last couple of minutes to be a nail-biting affair.

"The lads are so good. They didn't just win it here, they won it at Crawley, they won it Wimbledon, they won it at home to Oxford.

"They suffered a setback against Luton - we didn't deserve to lose that game but we did, and we suffered the six points taken away from us which we won with Chester.

"We have overcome all of that and have still won the league with two games to spare. It is a fantastic achievement."

The win at Kidderminster means that Stevenage can still amass 99 points by winning their remaining two games. The Conference record was set by Aldershot when they reached 101, but with the six points taken away following the demise of Chester, Stevenage believe they could set the new record.

Skipper Mark Roberts said: "It was important to get the championship in the bag, now we can enjoy it. But we built our success on winning football matches and nothing will change in the last two games. We want to win those as well.

"You just look at all the people that have made the trip up to Kidderminster, see all the lads and how they feel, it's just fantastic. It's one of the best days of your life.

"Obviously we have worked so hard to achieve this. No-one will probably ever know how hard we have worked and every one of the lads deserves a pat on the back. The lads that haven't played as much as the others have all kept the team spirit in the dressing room."
